with Father John Misty, Daniel Lanois, Becky Stark, and Great Northern
BOOTLEG THEATER, LOS ANGELES

Father John Misty
Coming together to take care of one of its own, the Bootleg Theater hosted "An Evening For Mayla", (daughter of Aaron Embry), on October 3rd, featuring the talents of Great Northern, Becky Stark, Daniel Lanois, and an acoustic set from Father John Misty. Mayla was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in August. The avenue for support is available here: Mayla Embry Benefit Donation Fund.
Thanks to Scott Sterling (Fold Silverlake) for organization, the evening unfolded gracefully, with Great Northern kicking things off with an intimate set highlighted by "Last To Know". Becky Stark, (Lavender Diamond), wowed the audience with a set that showcased the 'iron fist in velvet glove' nature of her voice. Daniel Lanois weaved spells with his guitar playing, deploying his producer's acumen to create the perfect tapestry of sound live. His steel guitar playing was affecting, and he hit the high-water mark of the night, switching to piano for a stark reading of "The Maker", which, given the gravity of the evening, served as a signpost.
Stripped of his band, Josh Tillman held court in his Father John Misty persona, and more than held his own, serving up acoustic versions of tracks from his debut, Fear Fun, throwing in a cover of Waylon Jennings "Donna On My Mind", and finishing up with his own tale of reckoning, "Everyman Needs A Companion", that featured a new closing verse that cited "matching friendship pentagram tattoos." Indeed.
