Tenth Anniversary

Bogart (2001-2018)

Hard to believe, it was ten years ago today when i sat down and rattled off some thoughts on Elliott Smith that became the very first BAMNWGAN transmission. Starting with no fixed point, it evolved over the years as a diary of live shows. For those curious about the name, check here...

2018 saw the passing of Bogart, participant in many of the travels tracked on the blog over the years. We would walk whichever city we were in (read: attempting to enter every restaurant in SF's Mission District), then he would sleep in the car during the show, and we'd knock out a post-show walk. Now and then we'd hit the venue lottery, and he could attend. Too many adventures to recount here, but shoutouts to Thee Parkside in San Francisco and Muni Winery in Los Alamos, who were always ready with a water bowl, and the bands who were uniformly kind. Not surprisingly, he took to All Dogs. One story worth noting is the time we scoured Silverlake (LA) until we found the building from the cover of Elliott Smith's Figure 8. While the show is the thing, his legacy of exploration will stick with me.

HOUSES OF HEAVEN

THEE PARKSIDE, SAN FRANCISCO
29 APRIL, 2017
Chasms at Thee Parkside, SF
It was a family affair at Thee Parkside, community in the very best sense, gathered for a stacked bill of Bay Area dark noise. Kicking things off was Some Ember's Dylan, doing it solo style. The duo, now located in Berlin, was stateside for a visit, and a happy late addition to the bill. Following up was Houses of Heaven, helmed by Keven Tecon, (Vaniish, Wax Idols), which balances a motorik pulse with guitar detonations. Their debut, Remnant, will be out on Felte Records May 19th.
Chasms (and their loyal fog machine) provided the emotional apex of the night, sending out "Beyond Flesh" to the late Cash Askew, and putting paid to any dry eyes that remained in the house. LA's Wreck and Reference capped off the night in style, providing a physical release to all the emotions bottled up. With moral support in the audience from members of Wax Idols, Them Are Us Too, and All Your Sisters, it was a night where everyone came away feeling a little less alone in the world.

B.A.R.F. Rules Everything Around Me

B.A.R.F. (Bay Area Record Festival)
THEE PARKSIDE, SAN FRANCISCO
27 September, 2014
B.A.R.F., AKA the Bay Area Record Fair, once again left its indelible imprint on San Francisco. Featuring over 30 local record labels, including Slumberland, 1234Go Records, Moon Glyph, Crime On The Moon and non-label co-conspirators such as BFF.FM, the fair commandeered the street outside Thee Parkside, leaving the venue open for a parade of live music throughout the day. Given the daytime schedule, it was the perfect opportunity to throw the dog in the car and take a road trip. Started by Father/Daughter Records and Professional Fans, the community building affair, now in it's second year, was the recipient of a fall "heat wave", in so much as it can be in SF. Catching up with old friends, meeting new, and putting actual faces to internet friends, all the while browsing the stacks and crates made for the perfect day. No word yet on next year's plan, but mark a calender for that late September sweet spot.

Sleep Is The Cousin Of Death: Sleep Genius Showcase

SLEEP GENIUS SHOWCASE w/RINGO DEATHSTARR
BAD NEWS/CHASMS/NEVER KNOWS/CRY
THEE PARKSIDE, SF, CA
10 MAY 2014

A recent field trip to San Francisco yielded great dividends in the form of a Sleep Genius Records showcase at Thee Parkside. Special guest Ringo Deathstarr from Austin, Texas held down the headliner slot, putting a cap on a lineup that otherwise spoke to the vision and diversity of the label. Bad News, Chasms, Never Knows, and Cry filled out the bill, each bringing their own twist to the proceedings. Cry kicked off the label's first showcase since their formation a few years back, and the male/female synth duo was perfectly placed, a party starter if ever there was one, rocking their Rolands with an attack reminiscent of the late Handsome Furs. Covering Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U" was merely the icing on the cake. Never Knows picked up the gauntlet, sticking with the machine theme, but taking things to a darker place entirely. The beauty of the dark wave of '80's dance music was its insistence on The Journey, that it would take you somewhere, as opposed to the weak-kneed Sudoku of much of today's EDM, and whoever the mysterious Never Knows may be, he adheres to that statute, knowing that it is, to paraphrase those great American philosophers Funkadelic, the brain that will set the behind free. Any friend of these pages is more than likely already conversant with SF dark noise duo Chasms, (Jess Labrador and Sky Madden), whom we last encountered earlier this year in Davis, CA. This evening marked their first hometown show of the year, and the evidence is viewable below, from the opening notes to the closing chaos, the siren song remains the same. The big news on their front is an upcoming LP, Subtle Bodies, and a series of Southern California shows celebrating the release, one of which we will most certainly catch. Bad News hews back to the early days of industrial, before the dance element was totally sandbagged for nu-metal. The duo was anchored by the intense stage presence of Sarah Bernat, while Alex S. Lukas churned up great clouds of noise. Highlight of their set was the song that took the phrase 'Apologize' through commanding repetition to a universal accusation on into salvation. Utterly overwhelming and spellbinding. Ringo Deathstarr more than lived up to their name, with the trio kicking out dark clouds of shoegaze goodness, unflummoxed by recurring sound issues, they kept it short and taut and winning, working out songs from their new LP God's Dream. While it was hard to recreate the lushness of the vocals with mic issues, they kept the overall volume loud enough to get lost in the waves of sound. It was great to finally catch them live, and a good opportunity for them as a tuneup for their forthcoming tour which sees them working from their homebase in Texas up to NYC, where they'll pick up a number of shows across the North and Midwest opening up for Peter Murphy.
